Brief Report
WIND TURBINE TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS
for ITEC/SCAAP Countries
held during 1st to 28th February 2017

 

The 19th International Training Course on "Wind Turbine Technology and Applications" was successfully organized by the ITCS unit during 01st to 28th February 2017. This is a special training course for ITEC / SCAAP Countries sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India under ITEC / SCAAP programmes. The objective of the International Course is to address all aspects of Wind Power starting from introduction to wind and its technology, wind resource assessment, installation, operation and maintenance aspects of wind farms along with financial analysis and CDM benefits. The course was attended by 27 Participants from 18 countries (Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Panama, Philippines, Thailand, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania and Vietnam).

The training course was inaugurated by Dr. Rajesh Katyal, Deputy Director General, and Head OW&IB NIWE and Dr. G. Giridhar, Deputy Director General and Head SRRA, NIWE.

The course content of the training were handled by eminent Scientists, Engineers and other wind energy professionals from NIWE, wind turbine industries and academic institutions, who have years of experience. During the 28 days programme, Forty Five classroom lectures were scheduled apart from practical training and study visits to wind farm and wind Turbine manufacturing factory.

The practical training was arranged on Wind Resource Assessment, Testing and R&D equipments apart from factory visit to M/s Gamesa Large Wind Turbine Manufacturing facilities, Mamandur where they had a chance of listening from the industry experts who are actually in the process of making wind turbines.

The participants were taken to southern part of Tamil Nadu to visit Wind Turbine Test / Research Station Kayathar, where they got exposure on small and large wind turbine testing process apart from visiting wind farms in and around Kanyakumari, where wind turbines are installed in large numbers like coconut trees.

Participants stayed at Kanyakumari during the study visit period and the experience at Cape Comorin (southern tip of India) are so exciting to the participants such as seeing the sunrise and sunset and cultural visits showcasing the spiritual heritage of India.

Dr. S. Gomathinayagam, Former Director General, National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function and distributed the course certificates to all the participants.

The course structure and organization of training was highly appreciated by the participants. The participants were very much satisfied by the quality of lectures and hospitality they found in India.
